ICF's Updated Code of Ethics

By: Linda Secretan, PCC, NBC-HWC

Ethics Code and Beyond: What happens after we sign on?

We learned in March that the new Core Competencies go hand in hand with the revised ICF Code of Ethics.  What does this mean in the real world? In our world as coaches – both those with an ICF Credential and those who have travelled another route to coaching?

  • Can we even use the term “credentialed?”
  • What are the limits of confidentiality?
  • Can I charge a referral fee?
  • What about coaching LGBTQ clients?
  • How about clients with “dark thoughts?”
  • What if our client does something illegal?
  • What can we learn from others -- and how do we decide for ourselves about these and other sticky wickets? What keeps you ethical?

Join this interactive session to explore ethical conundrums and sticky wickets.

Linda Secretan, PCC, NBC-HWC, is a coach who has been fascinated with ethics in human endeavor ever since she encountered the word Nicomachean. The new ICF Code seemed an invitation to jump back into an exploration of ethics as foundational to a coaching practice. Once we agree to abide by the ethical code, how do we go beyond checking the standards boxes to open up our core values into daily coach-client issues? The questions draw us in to reflective practice, and reflective practice helps us introduce no harm into the coaching relationship.
