From the Past-President's Desk: Making Waves

With summer finally here, I’ve been back in the water a few times a week. It got me reflecting on chapter service through the metaphor of a swimming pool. A few years ago, as I stood on the deck of the chapter leadership pool, I asked myself “Do I actually have time to dive into this?”

As someone who's been at that precipice, I completely understand that folks are hesitant to commit. So many of us are feeling spread thin while holding space for clients, so safeguarding our capacity is important. Can we remain buoyant if we give just a sliver more of ourselves?

Well, from the deep end, the water is just fine, and we're still floating, but we do need more active swimmers. Our chapter is at its best when it is represented by leaders from different backgrounds, identities, lived experiences, and coaching niches. We need the thinkers, the catalysts, the dreamers, the creatives, and the connectors. Every single lens matters.

If you’ve been sitting at the edge of the pool, hesitating to dip in your toe, wondering if your voice matters, if you have enough time to offer, or if it’s "worth it" to volunteer, keep in mind:

• Micro-volunteering is still valuable. You don't have to swim laps for hours; just jumping in for a single brainstorming session, helping with a specific task for an upcoming event, or sharing your perspective with one committee can provide the exact spark our chapter needs.

• Chapter service shapes your coaching practice. Splashing into leadership shaped my own coaching identity, helped me consistently embody a coaching mindset, and expanded my network in ways I never anticipated.

Coast to Coast Report

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Coast to Coast Pro Bono Coaching Challenge this year!

As a part of International Coaching Week, from April 1 - May 17, we partnered with ICF Los Angeles and many other chapters to provide pro bono coaching to clients who may not otherwise have access to coaching!
